School Uniform and Colour Code Guidelines
1. Overview
1.1 These School Uniform and Colour Code Guidelines describe the way in which Gilmore Primary School works to encourage the wearing of school uniform within an agreed colour code.
1.2 The Guidelines are for all children enrolled in Preschool – Year 6 at Gilmore Primary School.
2. Rationale
2.1 The Guidelines are designed to inform families and students of what is acceptable clothing to wear to school.
2.2 We encourage all students to wear school uniform or clothing within the agreed colour code.
2.3 The wearing of school uniform helps to create a sense of belonging.
3. Procedures
3.1 The school uniform incudes:
- red short-sleeved and long-sleeved tops
- navy shorts, pants and/or skirts
- blue and white tunic dresses
- red fleecy jumpers
- Sun Smart hats
3.2 Uniforms can be purchased from the P&C through order forms available from the Front Office. Second hand clothing may also be purchased from the P&C.
3.3 Students at Gilmore Primary School choosing to wear generic, non-uniform clothing items are encouraged to wear the school colours of red (tops) and navy blue (bottoms).
3.4 In accordance with the ACT Cancer Council policy and our school’s Sun Smart Policy, a Sun Smart hat is necessary. The Cancer Council recommends broad brimmed (minimum brim of 5cm), bucket styled and legionnaire hats.
3.5 Suitable shoes have an enclosed toe and heel, including well-formed sneakers, leather shoes and boots. Well-fitting shoes are important as ill-fitting shoes can have negative long term effects on children’s feet. Thongs, clogs (such as Crocs) and open-backed sandals can result in injuries and are therefore discouraged.
3.6 The school has a tradition of Year 6 children wearing a commemorative top and/or jumper.
3.7 All clothing should be clearly labelled with the child’s name.
3.8 School staff encourage children to be responsible for the care of their school clothing. This forms part of aspects of curriculum relating to the Early Years Learning Framework (Preschool) and personal and social capabilities within the Australian curriculum (Kindergarten-Year 6).
